Supporting Your Child’s Education

Rec­og­nize and encour­age your child’s inter­ests and tal­ents, have con­ver­sa­tions with her, be involved in her home­work, stay in touch with school staff and teach­ers, and have high expec­ta­tions for your child’s aca­d­e­mic success.

Have high expec­ta­tions for your child’s aca­d­e­mic suc­cess. DiMartino and Clarke empha­size on being inter­ested in her progress at school, and per­son­al­iz­ing her expe­ri­ences. Set goals and stan­dards that are appro­pri­ate for her age and matu­rity. Read to her and have her read to you. Dis­cuss what you’ve read and seek writ­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties such as jour­nals, mes­sages or lists together.

Be involved in her home­work. Ask and encour­age her to ask ques­tions. Pur­sue inter­ests and answers by pur­su­ing ref­er­ence mate­ri­als. Par­tic­i­pate in home learn­ing activ­i­ties. Think about her strengths and areas that need improve­ment. Make a plan to sup­port her improve­ment. Give her math drills, for exam­ple, for defi­ciency in math.

Have con­ver­sa­tions with your child. Talk to her about things that are impor­tant to her. Reflect on lessons learned through expe­ri­ence. Broaden her view of the world by talk­ing to her about cur­rent events. Talk to her about peo­ple you admire and give rea­sons why.

Stay in touch with school staff and teach­ers. Talk about sub­jects taught in school. Watch an edu­ca­tional video or a movie that relates to the sub­ject. Help her gather or pur­chase mate­ri­als for class project or group activities.

Bar­ber et al. rec­om­mend rec­og­niz­ing and encour­ag­ing her spe­cial tal­ents – sports, dance, music, math or sci­ence. Expose her to learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties out­side school. Take advan­tage of com­mu­nity events such as Boys and Girls Clubs, Y and community-center classes, muse­ums, nature con­certs, and the­atre events.
